Christie, Thanks for posting the "how-I-got-here" story. Like you, I had an accelerated path to the racetrack. People like you, especially you, made my very short racing career incredible! Look forward to following you this season on the internet from my slightly Southern location!
Go get 'em!!

74 bikes on grid?!?!? That's insane! I've never seen more than 40. Great story. I remember when I started racing, I had to stop buying fashion. I would see a great pair of shoes and have to ask myself if they were worth more than the equivalent track time.

You made a great point in your statement Christie and I thank you for publishing this. Kathleen was my aunt and she will be greatly missed. My family and I question why she got on to this motorcycle with him after many dangerous thrilling sometimes intentional scary rides. This man clearly had no regard for his or anyone else's life. Safety is FIRST and being cautious of who you give control to is key. If anyone can learn from this terrible tragedy it will not have to be suffered through again. Thank You

Well I'm 43 have been riding on the street since 17 (yep 26 years on two wheels in the melee that is American highways) and I'm still in 1 piece, are their accidents that cant be avoided? Sure. Is it a reason to not do something you love? NO! Life is full of dangers and as long as you take on riding with caution and awareness it is no more dangerous then getting out of you bed in the morning, WEAR YOUR PROTECTIVE GEAR! Pay attention to cars like you don't have a steel box around you (because you don't but they do :P) and chances are you too will have many years of healthy riding.

Same here, there are risks but I don't want to sit on the couch and watch TV and think about the risks of riding a motorcycle. I rather be riding and watch the drivers, not hope that drivers will see me.

I just found your blog and already like you :-)
I so agree with you, it seems this applies to a majority of the Yoga practitioners "I still wonder if yoga isn’t merely a vehicle, a place, in which to wear really awesome, sporty clothes, feel trendy, and look hot"
I prefer to burn calories while riding my bike, the one with an engine under me :-)

You are my new inspiration and idol. I started riding 4 years ago and stopped after only a season and a half, because well, I got preggers. I sold my Ninja 250 that I had ridden to bare metal, my leathers (I knew I'd never squeeze back into those size 2 puppies after having a kid), helmet, everything, but my boots. My daughter is now 2, and after reading your story I am humbled and inspired. I think mama needs to get another bike... Best wishes in 2012. I'll be watching for you - if SPEED EVER airs Supersport - BASTARDS. Keep it shiny, Clare

Just found your website & your story is similar to mine I always loved watching bikes, but I had no experience & had heard all the horror stories so was reluctant to try. Then one day I decided to just do it. I got my L's first go & havent't looked back since. I get my full licence in 5 days. I have travelled 4 times more Km's in the 2 years I've been riding then my husband has in almost 4 years. I ride alot by myself because I just love the freedom of it, I also do some group rides. Thanks for inspiring women everywhere that they can do this too. (next stop race track, maybe............)

It's not yoga... it's crash injury prevention! :D

I started doing Bikram Yoga to improve my heat tolerance, first and foremost, and discovered it seriously, *seriously*, prevents injuries when you crash.
Case in point - a highside in Vegas in 2008. My ass carries a lot of energy, and it flipped over my head 5 or 6 times. Aside from a very mild concussion, I had sore abs for the next few days.
Although I do not actively participate in Bikram, or any organized yoga class any more, I do enjoy doing many of the moves, at home, in the sun, next to the pool.
Also before I workout, and often times before I ride on race weekends.

I learned how to mediate by making pain go away due to an issue completely unrelated to any injury I've ever attained.

Crash. Injury. Prevention. FTW

Great write up as usual! Can't wait for the one about the recent Sunday-Funday with the crew! ;-)

I started doing Bikram Yoga to improve my heat tolerance, first and foremost, and discovered it seriously, *seriously*, prevents injuries when you crash.
Case in point – a highside in Vegas in 2008.

I learned how to mediate by making pain go away due to an issue completely unrelated to any injury I’ve ever attained.

Crash. Injury. Prevention. FTW

Way to go Christie. Flowing through the woods on a mountain bike om a crisp morning is definitely like meditation. Glad to see another motorcyclist find the passion. Now wait till you start learning to get smooth and quick going downhill, its similar to the feelings of control and focus that you get on the track

yep. I used to hate those (what I called) "yoga bitches" marching to the studio down the block from me in NYC when it first became cool. I know it's good for me, and some of my closest friends are yoga teachers. I enjoy the occassional class, but riding my bicycle is free and instant. I just need to remember to use some of those yoga stretches at home after my ride! I no longer see it as a trendy thing, it's just another form of exercise to me. If people want to turn it into something more, well, at least they're getting excited about doing something that's good for their health.
